Powell Reportedly Preparing To Leave Bush Cabinet

15 November 2004 -- Reports say U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has decided to resign.

High-ranking State Department officials, speaking to Western news agencies on condition of anonymity, said Powell told his aides today that he submitted his resignation on 12 November.

Spokesman Scott McClellan today said the White House is expected to announce four resignations from the cabinet today. But McClellan declined to say who would be leaving.

Powell was often seen as representing more moderate views on foreign policy in the administration of President George W. Bush.

Powell was chairman of the joint chiefs of staff during the 1991 Gulf War. He retired from the army in 1993.
