Annan Shocked By Aceh Destruction

7 January 2005 -- United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has been touring Indonesia's Aceh province, the region worst hit by the Indian Ocean tsunami.

Annan flew by helicopter over the devastated west coast of Sumatra island, saying he was "shocked" by the extent of the destruction.

Annan arrived from a tsunami crisis summit in Jakarta, where he urged donor countries to quickly deliver thousands of millions of dollars of cash aid to help the relief effort.

Indonesia today raised its death toll to around 100,000, bringing the total number of people killed to more than 150,000. Earlier reports had put the Indonesian figure even higher, but they have since been revised down.
