Seven Killed In Iraq In Suicide Bombings

31 March 2005 -- Two suicide car bombers killed themselves and at least seven others today in separate attacks in Iraq.

In one attack, a suicide bomber blew up his car at an Iraqi army checkpoint south of Kirkuk, killing three Iraqi soldiers and two civilians.

In the town of Samarra, a car bomber detonated his vehicle beside an army patrol, killing at least two Iraqi soldiers.

The U.S. military said three U.S. soldiers were killed in separate incidents over the past 24 hours.

In the southern city of Karbala, hundreds of Iraqi police and soldiers were on alert as Shiite Muslim pilgrims observed Arba'in, which marks the 40th day after the anniversary of the death of Imam Husayn and his brother Abbas in a battle over the Islamic leadership in the year 680.

Officials in Karbala said more than 3 million pilgrims had come to the city over the past week for the ceremony, which climaxed today.
