UN War Crimes Chief Says Croatia Cooperating Better

2 June 2005 -- The chief UN war crimes prosecutor today said Croatia has made great efforts to improve cooperation with the international war crimes tribunal.

Carla del Ponte had in the past sharply criticized Croatia's government for not cooperating more with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in catching war crimes fugitives -- specifically General Ante Gotovina.

But today, Del Ponte said after meeting Prime Minister Ivo Sanader in Zagreb that she is now convinced the government "is really, really willing" to locate and transfer Gotovina, who has been in hiding since the tribunal indicted him in 2001 over alleged war crimes committed against Croatian Serbs.

In March, the European Union refused to open accession talks with Croatia because Gotovina remains at large.
