Ukraine Holds Economic Forum

The Ukrainian mini-Davos 16 June 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Ukraine is welcoming six presidents and international business leaders to Kyiv today for a two-day investment forum organized by the World Economic Forum.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko convened the conference today.

The forum -- dubbed the "Ukrainian mini-Davos" -- was called by Ukraine's government, which is seeking international economic and business advice, as well as new investment opportunities.

In addition to several heads of states, some 150 corporate leaders from the energy, steel, and food industries are also in attendance.

Some 30-40 supporters of former President Viktor Yanukovych are protesting at the entrance to the building where the forum is being held. They accuse the authorities of authoritarism and persecuting the opposition.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
