UN Denounces Lebanon, Israeli Attacks

13 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- The United Nations Security Council has denounced a 12 July car bombing in Lebanon that injured the country's pro-Syrian defense minister, and a suicide bombing the same day in Israel that killed three Israelis.

The Security Council said in a statement that it strongly condemned the continuation of political assassinations and other terrorist acts in Lebanon.

One person was killed in the attack in Antelias on 12 July that injured outgoing Lebanese Defense Minister Elias al-Murr.

The statement by the 15-country Security Council also condemned the attack at a shopping mall in Netanya in Israel that killed three Israeli women and an 18-year-old Palestinian suicide bomber.

Israel blamed the Islamic Jihad militant group for the bombing and has announced the closure of the West Bank and Gaza, barring Palestinians from entering Israel.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas denounced the attack as "terrorist" and said it went against Palestinian interests.
