Fire Breaks Out At Moscow's Landmark TV Tower

18 July 2005 -- A fire broke out today out at Moscow's landmark Ostankino broadcasting tower.

Russian agencies said the blaze erupted just before 4 p.m. local time on the third level of the 540-meter tower. Its extent is unclear.

In 2000, a short circuit sparked a devastating fire that gutted the Ostankino tower, killed three people, and knocked out almost all televison service to people in Moscow for several days.
