Gunfire Wounds 25 Iraqi Workers; U.S. Investigating

16 August 2005 -- The U.S. military said it was investigating an incident in which at least 25 workers were reportedly wounded today by what appeared to be helicopter fire as some slept on the roof of a central Baghdad hotel.

The nationality of the workers was not immediately known.

Witnesses also said some of the wounded men were having breakfast on the street below in the open air at the time.

Police told Reuters at least 25 men were wounded.

Four U.S. soldiers later arrived at the Yarmuk hospital to investigate the incident, checking the conditions of the workers and registering their names.

They told Reuters that they could not confirm if U.S. troops were involved.
