Russian Helicopter Crashes During Exercise

18 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- A Russian military helicopter crashed early today in Russia's Far East region, near the Chinese border, injuring three crewmembers.

A spokesman for the Interior Ministry's regional office says the MI-8 helicopter fell from a height of 1,200 meters, 45 kilometers from the city of Khabarovsk.

He said the crash occurred during a training flight after paratroopers had jumped from the chopper.

The spokesman says the crew's commander broke both his legs, while the two other crewmembers sustained light injuries.

Military investigators are investigating the crash.
