Saudi Arabia Confirms Suspected Al-Qaeda Chief Killed

18 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- The Saudi Interior Ministry today confirmed that one of two militants killed in clashes with Saudi security forces in the city of Medina was Saleh al-Ufi, the suspected chief of Al-Qaeda in the country.

Earlier, Arab news channel al-Arabiya reported that al-Ufi was killed in clashes today between police and suspects in the holy city of Medina.

Ufi, one of the kingdom's most wanted suspected militants, was one of two men from a wanted list of 26 still at large. The other, Taleb Al-Taleb, remains in hiding.

Al-Arabiya said earlier that the security forces had detained an unspecified number of suspects in Medina.
