Daghestan Court Sentences Chechen Insurgent

19 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- A court in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Daghestan today sentenced a Chechen insurgent to 25 years in prison for allegedly taking part in the execution of Russian soldiers taken prisoner.

A video operator caught the September 1999 beheading of the six Interior Ministry soldiers on tape. Islan Mukaev was arrested in June in a camp for Chechen refugees in the republic of Ingushetia.

He admitted taking part in the 1999 Chechen insurgent raid on Daghestan but not in the killing of the prisoners.
