(RFE/RL) May 25, 2006 -- Russian media report that landslides triggered by melting snow and heavy rains have left hundreds of people homeless in southern Chechnya and severely damaged 11 villages.

Akhmed Khatatayev, the administrative head of the Nozhai-Yurt district, said more than 60 homes have been destroyed, and that the landslides struck so suddenly that most families had no time to save any possessions.
