The regional Interior Ministry says the attack occurred late on October 22 in the Daghestani capital, Makhachkala.
The assailants escaped.

(RFE/RL) October 23, 2006 -- Two gunmen today opened fire on police officers checking identity documents in the restive southern Russian region of Daghestan, killing one and wounding another.
