U.S. officials said all nine people on board were evacuated and there were no serious injuries.

It was at least the eighth U.S. helicopter to crash or be taken down by hostile fire in Iraq in the past month.

U.S. military officials said it appeared the Black Hawk had been brought down on February 21 by small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades.

An insurgent group, the Mujahedin Army, claimed responsibility in an Internet statement for bringing down the helicopter. The authenticity of the statement could not be independently confirmed.
