U.S. Says Russia Making 'Slow Progress' On WTO Bid

April 10, 2007 -- The top U.S. trade official says Russia is moving too slowly in adopting the commitments and responsibilities needed to qualify for membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO).

U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab described Russia as making only "slow progress" toward entry in the 150-country WTO.

Schwab also said she not foresee the U.S. Congress taking action any time soon to repeal the Jackson-Vanik amendment, which denies Russia normal trade relations with the United States.
