Kyrgyz Official Detained For Corruption


Colonel Mairambek Jumabekov Being Detained (RFE/RL) BISHKEK, June 15, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- A senior officer in Kyrgyzstan's anti-corruption police has himself been detained on suspicion of corruption, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reported.


Security officers said they broke down the door of Colonel Mairambek Jumabekov's office in Bishkek and caught him in the act of taking a bribe. Kyrgyz leaders have been under pressure to deliver on promises to crack down on corruption.
