Russian Deputy Justice Minister Found Murdered in Moscow

Moscow, May 23 (RFE/RL) -- Russian security authorities say Deputy Justice Minister Anatoly Stepanov was found murdered early this morning on a street near his Moscow home.

Police discovered Stepanov's body lying on the street next to his home in Moscow's Mitino region. The cause of death was a gunshot to the head. No assailants have been captured.

Investigators from the Interior Ministry and the Federal Security Service are currently on the scene. No motive for the shooting has been given.

Stepanov had been Russia's Deputy Justice Minister since August 1993. He was in charge of monitoring the country's lawyers and notaries.
