Leader in Abkhazia fires two top security officials

Tbilisi, June 5 (RFE/RL) - The leader of the breakaway Georgian region of Abkhazia fired two senior security officials today for failing to reduce crime in the province.

Our correspondent in Tbilisi says Vladislav Arzinba sacked Maj. General Givi Agrba, the interior minister and Maj. Gen. Sultan Sosnaliyev, the defense minister.

The new interior minister is Colonel Amasbei Kchach, the head of Arzinba's personal security service. Vice Prime Minister Vladimir Mikamba moved to the defense post.

Georgian forces were forced from the region in 1993 following a brutal 13-month war. About a quarter of a million Georgians fled the region as a result of the fighting and have yet to be repatriated.
