Kuchma and Kwasniewski Sign Joint Declaration

Warsaw, June 25 (RFE/RL) -- Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma and Polish President Aleksandr Kwasniewski ended talks in Warsaw today with the signing of a joint declaration on regional security.

The declaration states that "the very existence of Ukraine as an independent country helps to cement the independence of Poland." It says no country has the right to veto another country's decision to join a defense alliance.

The declaration says the process of NATO expansion should be "evolutionary and open" in order to help strengthen political stability in Europe.

The two leaders also signed another six agreements during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace.

Kuchma, who began his two-day visit today, is expected to address both houses of the Polish parliament tomorrow morning.
