Worker Dies In Ukrainian Nuclear Plant Incident

Kyiv, July 25 (RFE/RL) -- Ukraine's nuclear authority, Derzhkomatom, reported today that one worker died and a storage area was contaminated by radiation after two incidents yesterday at the Khmelnitsky nuclear power plant in western Ukraine. In the first incident, a pipe carrying steam burst during maintenance work, causing one worker to sustain fatal burns and head injuries. During the second incident, water entered a nitrogen storage area, causing minor contamination.

The nuclear authority said the incidents were minor and rated them at the bottom of an international scale for measuring nuclear accidents. Officials said there was no irradiation of staff or release of radiation outside the plant.

The Khmelnitsky plant, located 300 kilometers west of Kyiv, is a pressurized water nuclear power station.
