Russia: Chernomyrdin Says 60 Trillion Roubles Needed For Government Outlays

Moscow, August 13 (RFE/RL) -- The government has practically brought inflation under control, and August's inflation rate is a half percent, said Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin.

Chernomyrdin made the comment today in a meeting with officials of Russia's tax-collecting service, said Itar-tass.

Consumer prices rose by 15.5 percent since the beginning of the year, he said. Problems with decreasing industrial output, growing reliance on bartering, and a high level of unpaid transactions continue.

Tax breaks must be lifted to increase government budget revenues, he said. In fact, Chernomyrdin said the government must find 60 trillion roubles for government outlays over the course of the remaining year.
