Kyrgyzstan: IMF Team Visits Bishkek


Bishkek, 18 October 1996 (RFE/RL) -- A team from the International Monetary Fund is visiting Kyrgyzstan. The team is scheduled to hold talks today with President Askar Akayev, after meeting yesterday with Prime Minister Apas Jumagulov.

Pakistan's President Expected To Visit



Pakistan's President Farooq Leghari, who today began a tour of Central Asia in Tashkent, travels to Bishkek next week and will be in Kyrgyzstan for three days. Our Bishkek correspondent reports that agreements on fighting drug smuggling, and on cooperation between interior ministries will be signed.

Tajik Education Minister To Appeal For Textbooks



Tajikistan's education minister, Munira Inoyatova, has held talks in Bishkek with Kyrgyzstan's Education Minister Askar Kakeev. Inoyatova said that 24 percent of Tajikistan's state budget is spent for guarding the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border.

She appealed to Kyrgyzstan to supply textbooks and other equipment to Tajikistan. Tajikistan has issued similar appeals to Uzbekistan. Tajikistan has very large ethnic Uzbek and ethnic Kyrgyz populations.

Russian Defense Minister To Visit



A Russian military delegation visiting Bishkek has announced that Russia's Defense Minister Igor Rodionv will visit Kyrgyzstan late this month. Rodionov's visit is expected to coincide with a meeting of CIS defense ministers in Almaty.
