Ukraine: Nuclear Plant Shut Down for Second Time in a Week

Kyiv, April 4, 1997 (RFE/RL) -- Operators at Ukraine's Zaporizhe nuclear power plant worked today to restart a reactor that an emergency safety system shut off for the second time this week.

Spokeswoman Larisa Merkulova said that Zaporizhe's Number 6 reactor shut down yesterday when a metal fitting on the power assembly of one of its steam generators broke. The shutdown was the eleventh minor incident reported since the beginning of last year by the plant, one of five in Ukraine. Officials say none of the accidents has caused radiation leaks.

The plant, 400 km southeast of Kiev, is running at low power due to similar damage to a turbine generator. Ordinarily, Zaporizhe produces more than 10 percent of Ukraine's electric power. It is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and the third largest in the world.
