Washington, 23 April 1997 (RFE/RL) -- Slovakia's Foreign Minister Pavol Hamzik is in Washington for talks with top U.S. officials and congressional leaders.
The U.S. State Department says Hamzik is scheduled to meet Secretary of State Madeleine Albright later today.
Our correspondent in Washington says the United States has praised Slovakia's economic progress but is concerned about human rights and the slow pace of democratization.
Slovakia was initially considered likely to be among the first group of nations asked to join an expanded NATO, but it is no longer expected to be in the first group to be invited this year.
