Russia: Spanish King Visits Moscow

Moscow, 5 May 1997 (RFE/RL) - Spanish King Juan Carlos arrived in Russia today on a three-day visit aimed at strengthening economic and political ties between the two countries.

Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin met the king after he landed at Moscow's government airport, Vnukovo-2.

President Boris Yeltsin is expected to host a welcoming ceremony in the Kremlin later today for the Spanish king and his wife, Queen Sofia.

Yeltsin also is scheduled to hold talks with Juan Carlos tomorrow. Spanish Foreign Minister Abel Matutes is accompanying Juan Carlos.

Earlier today, Yeltsin met with Chernomyrdin. Interfax reports that their talks focused on Russia's economic and social problems, as well as national security issues in the wake of a series of violent attacks apparently linked to Chechnya.
