Chisinau, 4 June 1997 (RFE/RL) -- Joint groups of experts are set to begin work today on issues between Moldova and the separatist region of Transniestr.
The experts were agreed upon last month in a meeting between Moldovan President Petru Lucinschi and Transdniester leader Igor Smirnov. They met in Chisinau May 24 to discuss the implementation of a memorandum signed by the two sides in Moscow earlier in the month.
One of the groups of experts is due to work on drafting a special status for the breakaway region, even though Tiraspol continues to claim it is an independent state. The groups of experts will also discuss security arrangements in the Dniester river area, where the two sides' armed forces face one another.
