Albania: Ruling Party Affirms Election Date

Athens, 11 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - The leader of Albania's ruling Democratic Party today pledged that parliamentary elections in his Balkan nation will be held as scheduled on June 29.

Tristan Shehu, on a visit to Greece, told reporters in Athens that voting will take place on the scheduled day at all costs. He made the comment after meeting Greece's foreign minister and with the leader of its conservative opposition party.

Shehu acknowledged that campaigning in some areas of the country, which has seen widespread unrest since the collapse of several high risk investment schemes early this year, would be difficult.

Officials with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which is preparing to monitor voting, have reported obstacles in travelling about the country.
