Central Asia: Uzbek, Azeri Presidents Discuss Increased Cooperation

Tashkent, 18 June 1997 (RFE/RL) -- The presidents of Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan met today to seek greater economic cooperation between their countries.

Interfax news agency reported that Azerbaijan's Heidar Aliyev and Uzbekistan's Islam Karimov are expected to sign agreements that call for increased cooperation on transport and communications systems. They also plan to develop their oil and gas sectors.

The agency says the two countries are also seeking to increase trade, which totalled only eight million dollars last year.
