St.Petersburg, 19 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - A St.Petersburg shipyard has built a submarine for underwater tourists and handed it over today for its first trial run beneath the waves.
Itar-tass said the submarine was developed by the Rubin design bureau, a top Russian military enterprise now working also on civillian projects. The submarine can carry up to 40 passenegers, who can observe marine life through large loopholes.
The Rubin bureau has designed, among other things, the missile-carrying nuclear Typhoon submarine.
