Montenegro: Early Presidential Election Called

Belgrade, 23 July 1997 (RFE/RL) -- In rump Yugoslavia, the speaker of the Montenegrin parliament, Svetozar Marovic, today moved to cut short the mandate of incumbent President Momir Bulatovic.

He called presidential elections for October 5, practically three months before Bulatovic's mandate expires. He said the election campaign should begin immediately. Montenegro is the smaller of the two republics which make up rump Yugoslavia.

The move is closely related to a power struggle within the ruling Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS). Bulatovic was stripped of his post as party president earlier this month by Marovic allies.

Bulatovic's backers maintain the sacking was illegal.
