Russia: Coast Guard Holds Joint Exercises with Norway

Murmansk, 14 August 1997 (RFE/RL) -- The Russian and Norwegian coast guards are holding joint exercises today in the Barents Sea to practice rescue efforts on open waters.

Itar-Tass news agency reports that one Norwegian ship -- the Andenes -- arrived yesterday in the northwestern Russian port of Murmansk. Another ship -- the Tromsoe -- is due to arrive shortly.

The exercises will be supervised by Colonel General Alexander Tymko, first deputy director of Russia's Federal Border Guard Service, as well as Admiral Einar Skorgen, commander-in-chief of armed forces in northern Norway. Finnish military officers also are expected to be involved.
