Russia: Canadian Minister Hopes To Boost Trade

Ottawa, 18 September 1997 (RFE/RL) - Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien travels to Russia next month in an effort to boost trade between the two countries. Chretien will head a delegation of senior government and business officials in a three-day trip.

On October 19, he will meet with Russian President Boris Yeltsin. The following day, he and the trade mission will meet with senior Russian government and business leaders. The delegation then travels on to St. Petersburg for more discussions.

Two-way trade totaled about $750 million last year and, according to Canada's Foreign Affairs Department, is expected to reach about $850 million this year.
