Brussels, 22 October 1997 (RFE/RL) - The European Union's senior official for enforcing its single market will tomorrow begin a two-day visit to Romania to advise the country's government how to comply with the market's economic rules.

Commissioner Mario Monti is due to meet with President Emil Constantinescu, Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea and other high Romanian officials.

According to EU spokesmen in Brussels, Monti will tell the Romanians that single-market rules will bring competitiveness and growth to the country's economy, and urge them to expedite reforms that meet the rules.

Romania is among 10 Central and East European nations already closely associated with the EU and seeking full membership in the 15-nation body.
