Russia: No Deviation In Iraqi Sanctions Evident

Washington, 26 November 1997 (RFE/RL) - U.S. State Department spokesman James Foley says there is no indication that Russia has deviated in any way from demands that Iraq comply with U.N. resolutions.

Foley told reporters yesterday, however, that U.S. officials are not surprised that Russia, to one degree or another, is playing the role of advocate or lawyer for some of Iraq's concerns.

Foley said Iraq President Saddam Hussein failed to drive a wedge through the international coalition and the United Nations Security Council when he precipitated the crisis over arms inspectors.
