Russia: Federation Council Approves Kosovo Troop Deployment

Moscow, 25 June 1999 (RFE/RL) - In a closed session, Russia's Federation Council -- the upper house of parliament -- today unanimously approved a plan to deploy 3,600 peacekeeping troops in Kosovo. There had been concern about the ability of Russia to fund the peacekeeping contingent. Estimates of the cost to maintain the Russian force in Kosovo range from $60 million to over $100 million. The Russian troops will not have their own sector but will work alongside French, U.S. and German peacekeepers already in Kosovo.
