Tehran, 14 July 1999 (RFE/RL) - Thousands of Iranians gathered in central Tehran today for a demonstration to support the government and to denounce the six days of pro-democracy protests which ended last night. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ordered security forces and militant Islamists to crush protest demonstrations and re-establish public order. Khamenei's message to the nation was broadcast on radio late last night. Iran's moderate president, Mohammad Khatami, has also condemned the student protests saying demonstrators had been infiltrated by what he called people of "evil aims."
