Chechnya: UN Official In Moscow For Talks On Refugees


Moscow, 17 November 1999 (RFE/RL) - The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is in Moscow today for talks with senior Russian leaders on the humanitarian crisis in the north Caucasus. Sadako Ogata is expected to hold talks with Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu. The talks are expected to focus on ways to ease the plight of civilians inside Chechnya and the difficult living conditions faced by the more than 200,000 refugees who have fled Russia's military campaign. Ogata is due tomorrow to visit Ingushetia for a first-hand look at the situation.
