NATO: Secretary General Arrived In Kosovo

Pristina, 18 July 2000 (RFE/RL) - NATO Secretary General George Robertson arrived today in Kosovo for a first-hand look at the situation in the province more than a year after the beginning of the NATO peacekeeping operation. Robertson and ambassadors of NATO-member states who accompany him met with the peacekeeping commander, Brigadier General Juan Ortuno of Spain. They will later visit the German sector in Prizren and then return to Pristina for meetings with UN officials and leaders of the ethnic Albanian and Serb communities.

A UN spokesman said tensions had eased today in the northern town of Kosovska Mitrovica after a clash between Serbs and peacekeepers.

The clash erupted late yesterday when a crowd of angry Serbs surrounded the UN police station in the northern, Serb part of the ethnically divided town to protest the arrest of a Serb.
