Yugoslavia: Kostunica Arrives In Montenegro

Podgorica, 17 October 2000 (RFE/RL) - Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica arrived in Montenegro today seeking support from leaders of the smaller Yugoslav republic. Kostunica met with Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic -- whose government declared last month's federal elections illegal and has refused to recognize Kostunica as Yugoslavia's president. Kostunica will ask Djukanovic's coalition to support the future Yugoslav government which will include pro-democracy reformers and allies of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic.

The agreement for the new government was announced yesterday after more than a week of negotiations.

Under the deal, an interim government will be formed in Serbia until after early legislative elections scheduled for 23 December.

Under the constitution, the federal prime minister must be from Montenegro if the president is, like Kostunica, from Serbia.
