Yugoslavia: Thousands Protest Jailed Ethnic Albanians

Pristina, 13 November 2000 (RFE/RL) - Tens of thousands of Kosovar Albanians thronged central Pristina today in support of relatives of ethnic Albanian prisoners held in Serbian jails. Marching in near silence, without the usual sea of banners and chorus of nationalist slogans that ordinarily accompany demonstrations in Kosovo, the huge crowd gathered between the national theater and the headquarters of Kosovo's UN administration.

Today's protest followed a six-day vigil by relatives of missing Albanians who are blocking the capital's main street, sleeping on mattresses placed across the road.

The office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees says 800 Kosovo Albanians remain imprisoned in Serbian jails 17 months after the end of the Kosovo war.
