Poland: Official Calls For Media Law

Warsaw, 8 January 2001 (RFE/RL) -- A high-level Polish official says authorities should de-politicize the country's radio and television committee to avoid a crisis similar to the one currently in the Czech Republic. Czech Television journalists are on strike demanding the resignation of the newly appointed general director of Czech Television, Jiri Hodac. They accuse him of bias. Maciej Plazynski, speaker of the Polish parliament, told Polish Radio today that Polish authorities should change laws before people demonstrate against the present situation.

Over 100,000 people demonstrated in the Czech Republic last week backing the striking journalists.

Plazynski says the Polish committee reflects the power of the biggest political parties which have their representatives on it. He proposes to add representatives of cultural and artistic organizations to the committee to make it less political.

Plazynski said his proposal will be worked out in detail before it is submitted to the Polish parliament.
