EU: Prodi And Verheugen Visit Prague

Prague, 5 April 2001 (RFE/RL) -- European Commission President Romano Prodi and Commissioner for European Union Expansion Guenter Verheugen arrived in Prague for two days of talks on the Czech Republic's bid to join the EU. The two EU officials are scheduled to meet Czech President Vaclav Havel and Prime Minister Milos Zeman as well as other politicians.

One topic likely to come up is a recent report by the European Commission listing several EU aspirants -- including the Czech Republic -- as being at high risk for BSE, or mad cow disease.

The Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland have all criticized the EU risk-assessment study published on 2 April, saying it does not reflect available data.
