Kyrgyzstan: Teens Slay Worker At UNICEF Shelter

Bishkek, 25 February 2002 (RFE/RL) -- Police say a social worker in a UN-sponsored shelter for homeless children in Kyrgyzstan's capital, Bishkek, was beaten to death by four teenagers staying there. The Interior Ministry press service says the four had tried to steal computers from the Center for Social Protection yesterday, but shelter supervisor Nadezhda Bezborodko tried to prevent the theft.

The teenagers beat her repeatedly on the head with an iron handle torn from a bed. Bezborodko died in the hospital of head injuries.

The teenagers fled and police are searching for them.

The shelter is one of several set up by the UN Children's Fund in Kyrgyzstan in recent years. It provides temporary housing for homeless and abandoned children and free lunches for the elderly.
