Russia: Bomb Blast Kills At Least 23

Moscow, 9 May 2002 (RFE/RL) -- A bomb blast in Russia's southern Daghestan republic today hit a bus carrying members of a military band on its way to Victory Day celebrations in the town of Kaspiisk. A doctor at the main hospital in the capital Makhachkala, some 40 kilometers north of Kaspiisk, told RFE/RL that the bombing left 23 people dead and some 200 wounded, 50 of them in very serious condition.

Interfax news agency reported that the bomb was hidden in the bushes and triggered by remote control.

The blast occurred during celebrations of the 57th anniversary of victory by allied forces over Nazi Germany.
