Central Asia: Leaders Convene For SCO Meeting


St. Petersburg, 6 June 2002 (RFE/RL) -- Leaders of four Central Asian nations are due to arrive today in St. Petersburg ahead of tomorrow's meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Tajik President Imomali Rakhmonov, Uzbek President Islam Karimov, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev, and Kyrgyz President Askar Akaev are due in the Russian city.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Russian President Vladimir Putin will join the other leaders at the meeting. Zemin and Putin are scheduled to have bilateral talks today in St. Petersburg.
