Yugoslavia: Former Serbian State TV Chief Sentenced

Belgrade, 21 June (RFE/RL) -- A Belgrade court today sentenced the former chief of Serbian state television to 10 years in prison for his role in the deaths of 16 people during the NATO bombing. The workers at the television station died when a bomb struck the building in April 1999. The court found Dragoljub Milanovic was responsible for the deaths because he did not carry out an evacuation order before the bomb struck.

NATO said the building in Belgrade was a legitimate target because television was a part of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic's war machinery. The bombing campaign was launched to halt a crackdown on ethnic Albanians in Kosovo.
