Afghanistan: Delegation Investigating Qadir Assassination

Kabul, 8 July 2002 (RFE/RL) -- A five-person delegation in Afghanistan is investigating the assassination of deputy government chief Haji Abdul Qadir. The team includes Afghanistan's interior minister, the rural development minister, the head of intelligence, and one of the original four vice presidents.

Transitional Authority President Hamid Karzai said yesterday that if the team "lacks any expertise," he will ask for foreign help in completing the investigation.

Interior Ministry official Mohammad Din Jurat today said two men were arrested late yesterday at a Kabul checkpoint in connection with the killing. He also said 10 guards at the Ministry of Works have been arrested for dereliction of duty.

Thousands attended Qadir's funeral yesterday in Kabul, before he was buried in Jalalabad. Tomorrow will be a national day of mourning.
