Russia: Regional Governor Shot Dead In Moscow

Moscow, 18 October 2002 (RFE/RL) -- Police in Moscow say the governor of Russia's far eastern oblast of Magadan, Valentin Tsvetkov, was shot dead today while on a trip to the capital. Police say Tsvetkov was shot as he left the Moscow office of the Magadan Oblast administration. Russian media reports that his two assailants escaped by car. The 54-year-old Tsvetkov had been governor of Magadan since 1996.

The killing is the second involving a Russian politician in less than two months. State Duma Deputy Vladimir Golovlev was assassinated in August.
