Iran: Canadian Photojournalist To Be Buried In Shiraz

Tehran, 23 July 2003 (RFE/RL) -- An Iranian-Canadian photojournalist who was detained and reportedly beaten by police in Iran is scheduled today to be buried there. Zahra Kazemi will be buried at her birthplace in Shiraz. Iranian officials say the burial place is the wish of her mother, but Kazemi's son wanted the body returned to Canada for burial.

An official inquiry released on 20 July said Kazemi, 54, died from a brain hemorrhage earlier this month after suffering a fractured skull from a sharp blow to her head.

Kazemi was arrested, and reportedly was beaten by Iranian police, after taking photographs outside a Tehran prison. She was reporting on alleged torture of detainees.

President Mohammad Khatami has ordered the country's judiciary to find those responsible for Kazemi's death.

The Iranian prosecutor accused by some reformist critics of sharing in responsibility for her death has been appointed to investigate the case.
