Iraq: Hussein Says Sons Died As 'Martyrs,' U.S Will Be Defeated

Dubai, 29 July 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Television stations in the Middle East have broadcast what they say is a new audiotape of deposed Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, in which he mourns the deaths of his sons Uday and Qusay and vows that the United States will be defeated in Iraq. The Dubai-based Al-Arabiya and Qatar-based Al-Jazeera channels carried the purported Hussein tape.

On the tape, a voice like Hussein's is heard saying his sons Uday and Qusay had died "heroic deaths" when they were killed last week in a gun battle with U.S. forces in the northern city of Mosul.

Hussein, who is believed in hiding from U.S. forces, said the sons had died as martyrs, and that the United States "will be defeated" in Iraq.

The authenticity of the tape has not been confirmed by U.S. intelligence agencies.
